Building Small on North Avenue.47

A snow day here in the Valley and an opportunity to briefly document the past six weeks that have taken us from moving in, to finishing touches, to holiday entertaining, to fixing glitches, and onward to settling in with big satisfied grins. As it turned out, we had five days between the issue of our occupancy permit (the official word that a home can be inhabited) and the arrival of our holiday guests! We had to move in while accommodating the trades guys who still had finishing work to do. Most of the open floor space was covered in boxes…

Pretty Bathroom Update – Part 2

Now, on to replacing the very basic and ineffective light fixture – the kind one often finds in low cost rentals.  This is Part 2 of Pretty Bathroom Update.  (Check out Part 1 for the back story on this project.) Even though I’ve taken down and put up lights at Atlantic Lighting Studio, this is my first time uninstalling and installing a new light fixture in a junction box.  Caveat:  I’m not an electrician and I’m not suggesting you take on any sort of electrical projects.  I did consult an electrician about this project prior to starting and I highly…

Pretty Bathroom Update – Part 1

The Situation:  how I get to do my own thing Decorating and renovating decisions in our home must be voted on – by a committee of two –  two strong willed individuals with distinctly different tastes.  When we moved to our current house, we agreed that, since we have two bathrooms, we’d each claim one and in our own bathroom we could do what ever we want (decor-wise) – no permission required, no discussions, no compromises.  “What a splendid idea!” I frequently remark. My bathroom’s been a scrumptious shade of fuchsia since day one!  The other member of the committee…

I’m enjoying the friendly, new interface and I’m quite pleased that I’ve brought my creative worlds together into one blog, under the banner: decorate . illuminate . photograph . colour I shall explain: decorate: I’m studying Interior Design at Scheffield in NYC and have been forever designing, renovating, decorating and constructing illuminate: I’m a Lighting Specifier at Atlantic Canada’s premier lighting showroom, Atlantic Lighting Studio and studying for…

welcome to my closet…

Well… not really my closet.  But I designed it!   I’m an interior design student, who’s landed my first job – an opportunity to create a plan for a walk in closet.  I’ve been designing interiors since childhood, but this is my first assignment for someone besides myself and my first effort at designing with computer software.  Quite the learning curve!  But so exciting! The challenge:  to design a walk in for a resale home – planning for features that would appeal to a wide audience of potential home buyers, while keeping the budget for materials and labour within target….
