Building Small on North Avenue.47

A snow day here in the Valley and an opportunity to briefly document the past six weeks that have taken us from moving in, to finishing touches, to holiday entertaining, to fixing glitches, and onward to settling in with big satisfied grins. As it turned out, we had five days between the issue of our occupancy permit (the official word that a home can be inhabited) and the arrival of our holiday guests! We had to move in while accommodating the trades guys who still had finishing work to do. Most of the open floor space was covered in boxes…

Work in and around our newly landed home, has begun in earnest and we see progress at every visit.  If it were possible, we would be there ALL the time.  But, of course, we would be in the way and we wouldn’t get much of anything else done.  So, instead, we stop in a couple of times a day, bringing baked goods and hot drinks for the crew. The propane installers from Total Energy in Kentville were the first to get to work.  Our heat stove has been assembled and is being vented and made ready for firing up as…

Our team at Kent Homes has been busy today.  While the siding is being installed on the outside… … the painting has been completed on the inside.  Cabinets have arrived and are ready for installation. And the window and door trims, which were all pre-made, have been set in place ready for installation. Looks like tomorrow will be another big day!

Drywall is up, rigid board is on and windows are going in! OK, now I’m starting to get excited. Here are photos of the latest happenings at Kent Homes. This is the view from the living area down the hall to the master bedroom.       The bed in a box is taking shape. Rigid board going on the exterior. Our little pink house! One of the hall windows viewed from the inside.  The windows are all casement and awning, which are more air-tight than double hung.  We are also pleased to have no mullions which tend to chop…

Computer’s been off line for two days while we moved into our interim residence.  Rental lease is finished and new home is about 7 weeks away.  Good and kind friends have offered up their lovely home, perched high on a hill.  So as the wind rips and howls around the windows on this rainy stormy night, I’m posting the latest photos from Laura at Kent Homes. The roof structure went on earlier this week and Laura video taped the process for us. Click to watch video Once the roof was attached, insulation was put in place. With no weather concerns…

In a recent post, I’d wondered at how the team at Kent Homes gets the newly built floor up off the factory floor and onto the tracks to move it along the line.  Laura Maillet at Kent Homes has kindly provided an explanation with photos. Hi Deborah, I am happy to fill you in on details concerning how we build homes! As you may remember from your tour; our plant is L shaped. Early in the building process (along the base of the L) your floor and walls are being built simultaneously; the roof starts with just a bit of…

Word is in – the site prep work starts in two days.  Yay!  I can hardly believe it! I poured over the final plans last night until well past my bedtime.  The last little corrections and adjustments are being done before the production drawings begin tomorrow.  And then changes and corrections will be quite difficult to make. Tip:  There are many professionals working on your house plans, but it’s very easy for any one of them and several of them together to miss certain details.  You have your vision and you know what you want your home to be.  Pay…

While we’re waiting on the permit application process, here’s a little peek at material finishes  that are going into our new home.  Starting at the bottom, here are the floors.  This is a vinyl wood plank product that looks very much like wood but is water proof and not at all expensive. According to our research, this type of flooring seems to be taking over the market for these reasons.  This is Silver Bay Oak – a little distressed, a little barn boardish, warm wood with ashy overtones. The countertop for our Studio work space is a laminate called Cinder…
