Of course I love when clients say things like; “Great photos!” ”Just what we wanted!” and similar words of praise, but when a new client gets specific on their appreciation of how I envisioned their project… well…. that’s just the … Continue reading
I don’t think much in this world can compare to the delight of spending a week introducing two teenagers to the beauty and charm of our home turf in Nova Scotia. We recently enjoyed the company of our lovely nieces, who melted our hearts with their humour, gentleness and wisdom. Here are a few of my favourite moments.
Back in January when interior designer, Betty Ann Balcom, first brought me to The Lakehouse it was in the messy midst of renovations. Paint colours, flooring, fixtures, tiles, countertops, and lighting had yet to be finalized.
Fast forward 6 months. I step into a freshly transformed home, my breath catches in my chest and tears well into my eyes. It’s, as they say, breath-taking! Colours, surfaces and fittings support and inspire one another, flowing gracefully and serenely throughout each room. The house actually breathes in the muted colour tones of life on a Nova Scotian water’s edge. I’m enthralled!
I gleefully fill the next seven hours capturing the essence of the space. Here are a select few of my 300 images, with more to follow in the days ahead. The interior designer on this project was, as I’ve mentioned, Betty Ann Balcom with lighting fixtures provided by Atlantic Lighting Studio in Wolfville.

Greetings!
I’m so excited to now be with Atlantic Lighting Studio in Wolfville, NS! Chris, Mary and Mike, who are all Certified Lighting Specialists, are patiently teaching me everything they know about lighting – and they know bundles!
Really, so much goes into lighting a home well. For instance, did you know that matching up your shirt to your pants in regular incandescent light may mean you’ll spend the day at work looking rather oddly dressed? I used to think it was because I hadn’t had enough coffee before putting my clothes on.

Working at Atlantic Lighting Studio is an awesome opportunity for me to put my artistic, photographic and design skills to good use by helping commercial and residential clients design one of the most important and often most under valued aspects of their projects.
Since discovering the simple beauty of Danish lighting design last summer in Copenhagen, I’ve been very excited about lighting fixtures (called luminaires in the industry) so I feel truly blessed that this door has opened for me
Now… I think three of these would be just perfect in my kitchen….
Greetings!
A wet dull spring is slowly… verrrrry slowly… blossoming into summer. Promised myself to maintain a garden this year AND get my new series, entitled Expectations, ready for Swoon Gallery in October. Had time to slip in some goats for Susan Paczek’s Petting Zoo that opens at Swoon in July.
Here’s one called Blue Goat. It’s 10″x10″ paint and wallpaper collage on panel, $125. I’m feeling oddly turned on to old-fashioned wallpaper prints lately. I don’t know WHAT that’s all about!
Until next time,
Deborah
